5 topics we discuss in Childbirth Education

For most pregnant people, even if you already have a child, the process can be both overwhelming and joyful. Many birthing people and their partners choose to attend childbirth classes to gather information and lessen their anxiety. Whether you are planning to give birth at home, at the hospital, or at a local birth center - we have the essential information to help you support the birth experience you desire. Here are five topics we touch on during our childbirth education classes.

Importance of Nutrition & Exercise: Eating a nutritious diet during pregnancy is linked to good brain development and a healthy birth weight, and can reduce the risk of many birth defects. Nutrition also plays an important role in preparing the body for labor & birth. A balanced diet will also reduce the risks of anemia, postpartum hemorrhage after birth, as well as other unpleasant pregnancy symptoms such as fatigue and morning sickness. Regular exercise during pregnancy can improve your posture and decrease some common discomforts such as backaches and fatigue. There is evidence that physical activity may prevent gestational diabetes (diabetes that develops during pregnancy), relieve stress, and build more stamina needed for labor and delivery.

Common Pregnancy Diagnosis: It is important to recognize and u

nderstand the most common pregnancy diagnosis. For an example Gestational Diabetes (GDM) , and Intra Uterine Growth Restriction (IUGR) is a common diagnosis that some people may face during pregnancy. We teach about these diagnosis and discuss your alternatives options with you and your partner throughout your prenatal care.

Relaxation Methods and Techniques: If you are striving to have an unmedicated birth (Natural Birth) learning how to breathe and relax during contractions is the key to a successful natural birth. Understanding the different methods and techniques will give your partner confidence to support you during labor and will build your overall confidence about having an unmedicated birth.

OBGYN VS. Midwife VS. Doula: The choice is up to you, but one, or maybe more, of these three people could play a big role in bringing your little one into the world. Before the big day comes, you’ll need to know who they are and what role they might play in your baby’s birth plan. A lot of birthing families express their frustration of not understanding the difference between an Obstetrician-Gynecologist, Midwife, and a Doula. We collaborate together for the wellbeing of the birthing family.

Breastfeeding/Lactation Support: If you desire to breastfeed your baby, taking a breastfeeding education class may help build your confidence and prepare you for what to expect during your breastfeeding journey. There are many disparities that exist when it comes to black women and breastfeeding. Black women are nine times likely to be offered formula in hospitals than any other race. HIRE A LACTATION CONSULTANT AS IF YOUR LIFE DEPENDS ON IT.

My doula agency is committed to addressing the many disparities black women face during pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding, and postpartum transition. To sign up for our childbirth education class click the link here.
